The Fell Emperor’s bedchamber did not see use often. In the decades since his ascendance, he’d probably slept a full night less than a dozen times. Not that he suffered for it; his body could easily have gone weeks without any signs of weariness. Even napping an hour or two more than once a week felt like an indulgence.

Despite his infrequent visits, the private, hexagonal chamber had a full set of eight guards, one for each corner and two flanking the doors. They stiffened as he entered, faces brightening and displaying proud smiles at the honor of watching over their lord and master.

The Emperor ignored them, instead wandering to the bed at the room’s center and settling down on its edge. The furniture had been crafted for him in particular. Given his size and fact it needed to accommodate any partners he brought into it, he doubted there was a mortal ruler with a bed to match it, no matter how debauched they might be.

Ordinarily, he might have undressed and climbed into the bed to prepare, but his sister’s words continued to ring in his ears. It had been centuries since they’d conducted their last crusade. The battles had devastated the mortal kingdoms and proven the martial and magical dominance he and his sister had been granted by the Altar. At the time, he’d thought it proven once and for all.

But now? The prospect that there might still be some work to do stirred the smoldering fire in his chest that he’d thought nearly extinguished. And with that flame, came desire.

Panne entered a few moments later, her body language outwardly confident. But one glance from the Emperor was all it took for him to see past the veneer. Beneath her mask, her inner thoughts were a mess of excitement and fear.

“Panne ,” he said. “Join me. ”

The woman practically leapt at the invitation, hurrying to join him on the edge of the bed. Her skirts rose as she sat, exposing her legs to mid-thigh. The hem had been cut away, no doubt to remove the blood of her foes, while the rest of her looked as though it had been hastily scrubbed in preparation. Paired with the eagerness in Panne’s eyes, it lent her an almost innocent aura, like that of a young bride.

Though the Emperor doubted any bride had even gone to bed after slaying so many.

“Master,” Panne whispered, bowing her head slightly. “How would you be serviced?”

The Emperor did not reply. His eyes glossed over, irises burning as he peered through the veil into the ether. Primordial darkness answered the implied summons, gathering invisibly around him to await instructions. Then, with a casual wave of his hand, he cleaved through the air and the barrier it comprised. Where his fingers passed, a gash of shimmering nothingness welled. The dark intelligences on the other side surged toward the opening, fighting one another in their haste to pass through the handmade gate. Where they managed it, inky tentacles emerged, writhing and glistening with otherworldly ichor.
